Nellie McKay is an inimitable, and delightful songstress, actress, comedian, and storyteller. Her career has spanned everything from an album of Doris Day cover songs (Normal As Blueberry Pie), to her own wry jazz and folk numbers (often infused with her cheeky humor), to roles in theatrical works such as Broadway’s The Threepenny Opera. She has also written several acclaimed musical biographies including one on Rachel Carson, and her most recent, on the transgender band leader Billy Tipton, which was acclaimed by the New York Times as one of the best concerts of the year.
Nellie has previously released five full-length albums, her music has been heard on the TV shows Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Weeds, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS and Nurse Jackie, and she has appeared on numerous TV shows including The Late Show with David Letterman (with the Brooklyn Philharmonic) as well as Prairie Home Companion. Her writing has also appeared in The Onion, Interview and The New York Times Book Review. She is also an avidly vocal and passionate advocate for feminism, civil rights, and animal rights, and is a recipient of PETA’s Humanitarian Award.
